Story
The life science industry and its amazing people never shy away from a challenge. Whether it's making a drug for a seemingly undruggable target, creating a lifesaving vaccine in record time, or unraveling the complex issue of poverty, we face every problem with grit.
At Life Science Cares, we're always open to new ideas on how to advance our work. So when mountaineer extraordinaire and biotech journalist Luke Timmerman approached us about organizing a fundraising hike, we knew it would have to be a success. This is a man who summitted Mount Everest and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthy causes in the process. We're confident this event will be a fun bonding experience and a powerful fundraiser for LSC.
The Timmerman Traverse benefitting Life Science Cares will take an intrepid group of hikers 23 miles across the Presidential Traverse in the White Mountains over the course of three days. Each of the 20 leaders in the life science sector has committed to raise $25,000 and cumulatively raise $500,000 for Life Science Cares and our network of 27 partner nonprofit organizations.
Our partner nonprofits apply the very best research based solutions to help our neighbors on the path to self-sufficiency. Paired with volunteer hours as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated goods, Life Science Cares is a strong partner to these organizations, supporting them every step of the way.
To date, the Life Science Cares network has distributed more than $4.5 million in grants and performed 12,000 volunteer hours to support human service organizations in Greater Boston and Philadelphia. We're on track to grow exponentially with the addition of affiliate sites in San Diego and the Bay Area launched in 2021.
Funds from the Traverse will support our grant making in three areas.
Survival: Without addressing basic needs like food security, safety, health care, and housing, we cannot expect individuals to emerge from poverty. We fund multiple organizations working these areas to ensure Bostons most vulnerable residents have a strong foundation on which to build. We believe every person has the right to these basic human needs, and a significant portion of our effort goes to helping these organizations.
Education: A proven path to long-term financial success and overall happiness is education. Thats why Life Science Cares supports STEM education, college preparation and success, educational enrichment, and programs that support and inspire students of every age. We also bring students into life science companies to learn more about careers in the sector, encouraging students to pursue science and laying the groundwork for a diverse future workforce.
Sustainability: Includes organizations that work in job creation, job training, mentoring, and economic development. We believe that providing support to the best organizations that work to help families and individuals to lift themselves sustainably out of poverty is also an important need for the community.
