Cardiff Dogs Home can take in up to 1000 dogs each year. Every one of these dogs deserves as much comfort as possible while they wait for their forever family to find them.

At present there are 44 steel kennels at Cardiff Dogs Home, built in the early 1990s, and given an estimated lifespan of 25 years. These kennels do not offer much privacy for the dogs, so the wonderful staff try their best to make the kennels as homely as possible, despite the metal constructions having deteriorated greatly over the years. This will include attaching blankets to the inside of the kennels to provide a modicum of privacy for the dogs. There are also drainage issues which means the floor can often be wet after daily cleaning despite efforts to dry the floors as much as possible. The current layout means that dogs are often housed opposite each other, with narrow walkways connecting them, which can cause a fair amount of stress to the dogs.

Our aim is to improve the layout, construction, and sizes of the kennels to provide higher welfare standards for the dogs, as well as making them easier to clean and maintain. Lighting, heating, and drainage to the building will also be improved. All kennels will have solid walls between them to allow as much privacy for the dogs as possible while they are in their kennels. All kennels will be insulated, and sleeping platforms will also be installed to allow additional insulation from the cold in the winter months.

We also aim to enhance the experience for visitors, volunteers, and staff, by improving facilities and creating a meet and greet room to enable introductions to dogs available for re-homing as well as spending time with the dogs in care in a secure and homely environment.

It is hoped that by fundraising for these improvements, a better facility can be provided for the dogs and visitors for many years to come.
