Story
Maggie Oliver is best known as the Detective-turned- whistle-blower who resigned from Greater Manchester Police in late 2012 in order to expose the now infamous Rochdale Grooming Scandal. Her ability to connect with people and encourage them to speak out against injustice paired with her grit and determination to expose the truth eventually led to the multi award-winning dramatisation of the case entitled Three Girls (BBC One) which brought some of the issues to public attention for the first time. Maggie was also a key contributor for The Betrayed Girls documentary (BBC One).
Maggie established The Maggie Oliver Foundation (TMOF) in 2019. TMOFs vision is to create a society where survivors and those at risk of childhood sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) are empowered to live fulfilled and successful lives, and where every survivor is treated with dignity, respect and as an equal and valued member of society. Its aim is to help adult survivors to transform the pain of their abuse into power, by being supported to identify their strengths, adopt constructive coping strategies, increase self-confidence, and create and embrace positive life chances.
Maggie has set her vision in motion by building an amazingly caring, supportive and understanding team. A team who all share the same values and a fierce determination to make a real difference in the lives of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Values such as kindness, empathy, honesty, fairness, trust, human decency, and justice are what drive us. In addition, by sharing our stories and experiences we also expose and address injustice, misuse of power and corruption wherever we find it.
This empathetic and fully-trained team support survivors in a number of ways including through our Pain into Power phoneline, advocating for them through any criminal justice proceedings and facilitating therapy with trauma expert psychotherapists. We believe that mutual support and visible thriving of fellow survivors can be a catalyst for change. Many of our team have identified themselves as survivors of CSAE. A key factor in survivors learning to thrive is them witnessing the positive impact of healing of those around them.
TMOF is not only for people who have been victims of on-street grooming but for survivors of all faiths and backgrounds including those who have experienced any kind of sexual abuse, including FGM and forced marriage. Everyone's experience of sexual abuse is different, and TMOF exists to help all survivors as they continue on their deeply personal journeys.
One of the real after effects of sexual abuse is that survivors are often extremely isolated, feeling totally forgotten and alone, not knowing where to turn for the help they need to begin to rebuild their shattered lives. But they are not alone any more! A problem shared is often a problem halved......
Thank you for your interest in our work and for supporting us in anyway you can. As a small charity with a BIG mission, every donation really does make a real difference in the lives of survivors.
