Story
The Haven+ London is a pioneering creative community united by our shared experiences of the brokenness, pain and power of the creative life. We know from the Creatives we've already helped that our work saves lives, develops careers and boosts creativity across London. Since we started in 2016 we have provided mental health and emotional support to over 2000 creatives and 1-2-1 counselling to nearly 400.
We believe that the UK is in the midst of a mental health epidemic caused by a combination of lack of awareness and education, increased working hours and working pressures, social media and a range of other environmental factors. NHS England estimate that 1 in 4 adults experience mental health issues, this figure has risen by 20% since 1993. Tragically, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts, attempts and self-harm are all increasing, especially among the creative industries. All of this is before covid-19 began to take its terrible toll on our society.
Up to now our funding has come from generous individuals who saw this need, and through volunteering from creative leaders who understand the problem and are passionate about making a difference. This has been enough to get us off the ground, but we now need to find more partners, more benefactors and more donors.
Every week, more and more creatives come to us in need, but we are facing the reality of scaling down services because funding is not keeping pace with the need, especially because so many of our clients are now without work. We urgently need donations to increase the size of our operations and support staff. We need to recruit a full-time chaplain, to bring in a full-time administrator, to work from our office and counselling space in St. Pancras church, Euston - where our work finally has a physical base.
Longer-term our vision is for The Haven+London to evolve into a membership club, paid for by membership and subscription, but for now we need to raise £25,000 to stabilise our operations and meet today's pressing needs.
