• Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic supporting The Brick to raise awareness of Bed Poverty.
• Join us for a sleep over at The Brick Community Stadium on Friday 2nd August.
• Join us to support some of our town’s most vulnerable people.
On Friday 2nd August the Brick Community Stadium will be opening its doors to raise awareness of the number of people in Wigan and Leigh experiencing poverty and homelessness and to raise vital funds for The Brick Charity, to alleviate the financial pressures that individuals and families face.
Families in Wigan & Leigh can face various types of poverty, including fuel, food, hygiene, and period poverty but did you know that in the UK 894,000* children don’t have a bed of their own. Bed poverty is a critical part of child poverty, and it manifests in different ways for different families. Some children share beds with their parents due to the lack of separate sleeping spaces, others sleep on the floor, and some can't replace broken beds or buy new bedding.
The Brick provides all sorts of furniture and household items, including beds, along with duvets, pillows, and bedding, to families in need every week. In the last 12 months we have donated over 165 brand new beds. This crisis is real and happening within our community, but together we can make a difference.
Will you stand with us by giving up your bed for one night and sleeping in the concourse of the stadium to support some of the most vulnerable people in Wigan.
Funds raised from the Stadium Sleepout will support projects like our furniture re-use schemes and multibank that sources and redistributes essential household items to people in need via our network of referral partners such as social workers and schools.
Here’s what some of our beneficiaries have said:
“The donations provided by The Brick made me feel better as I can provide for my family, and I can concentrate on my gas and electricity bills. My home is warmer and looks better. The children are happier in the home. Also made the children want to look after the bedroom and help me tidy the house.”
“It has made me feel valued. Made me feel like I am worthy enough to receive nice things. I walk taller now as I feel better about myself.”
“This project has had a big impact for me. It shows that people care. I had nothing and I am so thankful.”
You can help by joining our Brick Stadium Sleepout in partnership with Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic. By joining us you will be highlighting the work we do and raising vital funds for our work to continue.
