Story
Teignmouths first lifeboat was established in 1851, the RNLI taking over the running of the station in 1854. In 1863 a new boathouse was built on the waterfront with doors facing the harbour to make for an easier and speedier launching of the lifeboat. Over the following 89 years the stations seven lifeboats were stationed at Teignmouth launching a total of 64 times and saving 118 lives before the station was eventually closed in 1940, its role being taken over by the motor lifeboats at the Brixham and Exmouth Lifeboat Stations.
After an absence of 50 years, the RNLI lifeboat station at Teignmouth was reopened in 1990 with an Atlantic Class Inshore Lifeboat being housed in the original lifeboat station. Since that date three Atlantic Class lifeboats have stationed at Teignmouth have carried out numerus rescues and assisting many people.
The volunteer lifeboat crew provide a 24-hour search and rescue service 365 days a year along the South Devon Coastline, but none of this would be possible without the support of the public and their donations. It costs in the region of £56k a year to run and maintain the service in Teignmouth, all of which comes from the generous donations of the public.
