Story
Why do we need your help?
With half a million older people going at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all, the need to build connections has never been greater.
The Cares Family seeks to reduce loneliness amongst older and younger people, alike, by connecting them, through our face to face programmes. We operate in five loactions, North London Cares (2011), South London Cares (2014), Machester Cares (2017) Liverpool Cares (2018) and East London Cares (2019). However, due to Covid-19 we have had to transition these programmes to virtual ones.
65% of the neighbours we work with count The Cares Family networks as their only form of social connection. We are supporting those most at risk of extreme social isolation and at highest risk of severe illness from Covid-19. In three months, we've established new ways to support neighbours across London, Manchester and Liverpool.
- We've made 3,593 phone calls to 1,540 older people to reduce loneliness and provide vital support like food or medicine delivery.
- We've matched 668 older and younger neighbours to call each other on the phone for company and conversation
- We've hosted 222 social clubs on Zoom. Neighbours have enjoyed life drawing, chair yoga and desert island discs. discos!
- We're posting a monthly activity pack of daily creative distractions to over 4,000 older neighbours across London, Manchester and Liverpool;
- We've provided 121 technology training for 85 older neighbours to reduce the digital divide.
In taking on this 10k, you'll be supporting this work, tackling loneliness and connecting neighbours over the summer.
