Story
Us in a Bus is a small local registered charity based out of Redhill Aerodrome. We support people who are often isolated and who find communicating with the world (and the people in it) a massive challenge. The people we support have profound and multiple learning disabilities, complex needs and sensory processing differences, requiring speciality assistance to build meaningful engagement with others. Our services enable the people we see to access life-enriching experiences and to participate in the everyday things we take for granted such as time with friends, expressing how we are feeling and making choices for ourselves. Using Intensive Interaction at a weekly session, our Interaction practitioners aim to cut through some of these complexities and concentrate on what makes us all the same; the need to connect and communicate with each other in a way that means something to us and that contributes positively to emotional well-being.
Our 2023 Fundraiser has an international twist! We plan to swim to France for a Croissant and then swim back! Well do the whole distance as a team of 10 so not too great a distance per person.
The shortest distance from South Foreland, UK to Cap Gris Nez, France is 20 miles, so 40 miles there and back. Between 10 people, that makes 6,437 metres each, or 16 laps of the Lagoon at Buckland Park Lake, which is 400 metres. The benefit of this is theres less international shipping to swim round, smaller waves, no need to apply goose fat and its much easier to nip to the ladies.
The plan is to do 16 laps, each swimming together but in our own time. The Surrey Hills Adventure Company runs the location and will have all suitable safety provisions covered, including patrols on SUP to ensure our safety.
