Story
The charity vision is to reduce homelessness, which is a big problem, property prices are becoming out of reach of people and with the lack of council homes more and more people are privately renting. However, with private rental comes many challenges as you are dependent on the landlord and their objectives and goals, meaning that a stable home can very quickly become unstable and result in the tenant being asked to leave and resulting in homelessness.
It is a reflection of todays world that marriages are becoming more fluid, people are not staying together forever meaning that later in life homeless is on the rise and again a lack of council homes or rental properties and the impact on personal finances during this period people are ending up homeless through often very quick changes in circumstances. These people are directed by homeless services offered by councils to find privately rented properties as they have an income but owing to obligations, change in financial circumstance these people cannot afford the deposit or rents, or there are no properties available at such short notice. This leads into the person entering a downward spiral of no home, no work, no money etc.
The trustees recognise this problem and understand that we need to be putting in steps now to grow our charity to meet these challenges faced by our community as the problem is only going to get worse. The trustees consider a safe stable home as being the most fundamental part of a persons life. Without a home people have nowhere to build roots and give them a sense of pride, purpose or worth.
It is well recognised that homelessness or concerns over housing leads to mental health problems which create an additional downward spiral. A simple act of kindness by our charity in providing a home, not having to worry about a deposit, a flexible approach to weekly maintenance charge can and does change a persons life overnight and enable a person to stop existing and start living their life to reach their full potential. Furthermore, as our beneficiaries have been in the same situation, they come together to support each other during this period of change, offering food, furniture etc.
The charity has a bold aim and wants to have 1000 homes of various sizes, offering accommodation to all ages across the Dartford Borough, where beneficiaries can move between properties as their needs change, and they can stay with us in these properties for as long as they need or are able to. We want to remain Debt free as this means we are not leveraging peoples homes and can provide the guaranteed stability people need.
We will use all the income received by the charity to offer our beneficiaries a good home, treat them fairly and empower them to accomplish, all surplus income will be invested into additional properties.
