Svitlo Reads is a student-led initiative designed to make reading in English more accessible and enjoyable in Ukraine, but there are limited books in English in the standard Ukrainian curriculum, and buying them in Ukraine can be very expensive.
During frequent and prolonged air raids, pupils in Ukraine are often forced to spend many hours in school bomb shelters. To make the time spent in shelters more enjoyable and educational, Svitlo collects books in the UK and installs mini-libraries in the shape of red telephone boxes in Ukrainian schools’ underground shelters.
Your donations will contribute towards the stock of the books, the bookshelf (manufactured in Kharkiv) and the postage fund to send books to Ukraine.
Another part of Svitlo Reads initiative is training older pupils to deliver online reading lessons to our younger students. They teach pronunciation, explain word meanings, and help build confidence to encourage independent reading. Students discover that reading can be fun and enjoyable using the interactive platform Giglets during lessons. This initiative not only improves the English literacy of our younger students but also enhances the older students’ own English proficiency and offers an opportunity to become teachers under the supervision of our experienced qualified teachers from the UK.
Help us:
- provide a meaningful distraction and escape from the everyday realities of war
- give Ukrainian youth a chance to improve their English and discover the world through reading in English
- support disrupted education and combat learning loss
+ £10 could provide 4 English books to our school library in Ukraine
+ £30 could cover the transportation fee of 50 books from the UK to Ukraine
+ £50 will cover 1/10th of the cost of a bookshelf for a school’s bomb shelter.
