The National Garden Scheme has been inviting people to open their gardens to raise funds for nursing and health charities for more than ninety years. During that time, we have given away nearly sixty million pounds. And at no time have the gardens ever had to close not even during the Second World War. That is until 2020, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
All our gardens were closed for two months during lockdown, and even though we were able to reopen gardens from June, welcoming restricted numbers and following government guidelines, our garden income has dropped by 85% during 2020, reducing the level of donations we are able to give to our beneficiaries.
And this comes at a time when our core beneficiaries including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queens Nursing Institute need our support more than ever, as they are stretched to the limit by their involvement in the current crisis. For many we are their largest cumulative funder.
So please, if you can, show your support of our nurses by making a donation to the National Garden Scheme. Your generosity will help us to make a real difference.
I love the National Garden Scheme which has been the most brilliant supporter of Queens Nurses like me. It was founded by the Queens Nursing Institute which makes me very proud. As we battle Coronavirus on the front line in the community, knowing we have their support is a real comfort. - Liz Alderton, Queen's Nurse
