Help Adoption UK to support adopters
Nearly 4,000 children were adopted last year. Around three quarters of them will have suffered abuse or neglect in their birth families. Adoption doesn't wipe the slate clean. These children and their adoptive families will need help for a lifetime.
Cuts to child services mean that Adoption UK is needed more than ever. For every three calls answered by our helplines, two more calls reach only our answerphone because we just can't meet the increasing demand.
We want to reach more families with our advice and support services - from our helplines and local support groups to our online forums. Sometimes people just need to chat to other adopters on our forums or at a family event. Other times parents need expert advice in a crisis, or specialist training. They might need help dealing with violence from a child struggling to trust again, information about how to get more support for their child in school, or strategies for talking to their children about their birth parents. Some families who contact us are literally at breaking point.
We want to raise £5,000 by Christmas to ensure we can be there for more adoptive families:
£5 enables us to answer a call from an adoptive family in crisis.
£50 covers the start up costs for a new community volunteer, to link families up.
£200 ensures our vital online forums stay open 24/7 for one week .
£1,000 could help us run a local community event or establish a new support group.
"The help we received gave us the confidence to change schools. She's much happier and our life has changed so much for the better. Adoption UK made us realise we were not rubbish at parenting and it was worth fighting for the support our daughter deserves."
