Story
In 2020, the Home Office released statistics surrounding human trafficking and potential victims of human trafficking, revealing that there were 4,946 child referrals to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).* This means that over 13 children are identified as victims of human trafficking or modern slavery in the UK every day.
At STOP THE TRAFFIK, we work in trafficking prevention, tackling this horrific industry by trying to make it harder for traffickers to operate. To support our work in creating innovative and data-driven campaigns to prevent exploitation of vulnerable communities, we've created The STOP THE TRAFFIK 13 for 13 Challenge, a way for you to take part in our mission.
THE CHALLENGE
Are you a budding cyclist? Cycle 13 kilometres. Are you a running enthusiast? Run 13 kilometres. Are you a super knitter? Knit 13 beanies! Make it your own. Want to bake for 13 consecutive days? Perhaps you'd like to challenge yourself to swim 13 laps? Go for it!
The point is to find something that's a bit of a challenge, but also something you find fun to do, all while raising money and getting your community involved in your journey.
Prevent human trafficking from wherever you are this summer, whether that's on the road, in the water, or from the comfort of your own home!
HOW YOUR MONEY WILL HELP
The pandemic has meant we have seen an increase in the number of children being exploited. As hundreds of children were out of school and traffickers changed their criminal business, more children were at risk of, or are currently facing, human trafficking and exploitation.
Your donation will help us to meet this increased need for our services by supporting us to continue:
- Working with local communities to run prevention programs in a campaign we ran to prevent the trafficking of refugees in January, 88% of those in our target population responded that that had taken preventive action against trafficking.
- Working with national businesses to help them mitigate the risk of human trafficking in their supply chains in turn making it harder for traffickers to operate.
- Working with financial institutions to stop the proceeds of crime, shifting human trafficking to become high risk and low profit, in turn protecting vulnerable people.
On average, every £10 we receive means we can reach around 100 people with vital preventative information and support.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE?
We've created a few tools to help you get started on The STOP THE TRAFFIK 13 for 13 Challenge:
1. A sample pledge sheet to stay organised with your pledges and it has handy links you might need.
2. A poster that comes with challenge ideas for you to use.
3. Check out our social and share a post with your friends and family and challenge them to take part!
ABOUT STOP THE TRAFFIK
We run awareness campaigns, research projects and training sessions to help people better understand how trafficking works, making it more difficult for traffickers to recruit people. We work with organisations to help them identify risks of trafficking in their supply chains, arm small businesses with the tools to mitigate risks of trafficking in their operations, and work with banks and financial institutions, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to help prevent traffickers from moving the proceeds of crime.
