Story

Each year we approve an average of 26 adoptive families, enabling and supporting them to help children grow and thrive.

At any one time our social workers can be supporting up to 40 families who may come back to us asking for additional information, advice and guidance through our post adoption support.

Challenge.

We are here for our families and their children to support them whenever and however they may need us. That is why this National Adoption Week the St David’s team will be taking on a 26km walking challenge. The challenge is symbolic of our approving an average of 26 families a year, we will walk 1km for each family we approve.

On the 20th October the team will walk the coastal path from Barry Island to our Cardiff Office. This will be a significant challenge for many of the team but we are determined to reach the finish line and in the process we aim to raise vital funds for our post adoption support.

Why?

Every adoption starts with a child, and each child’s story is unique. In their early years children will have experienced trauma that can have consequences throughout their lives, meaning that they can remain vulnerable, and may have complex needs.

We know that adoption is as rewarding as it is challenging and we are right beside our families every step of the way, providing support, training, expertise and comfort. We offer an emotional safety net of continued personal adoption support, being our families first point of contact should they need any further help or just someone to listen.

What difference does your donation make?

Your donations help us to support our families, meaning we are able to offer regular contact with an assigned social worker, information, advocacy, advice, adopter meet ups, support groups, training and workshops. Some families may also access specialist support, such as group sessions or individual support with a clinical psychologist. The money we receive through grants and donations is vital in ensuring we can continue to offer this variety of support. All donations we receive play a huge part in making a genuine and positive difference to our families.

“If we hadn’t had the support group, our social worker and everyone at St David’s I think we may have given up…but St David’s were always there when we needed them, at every stage. They still are.” Adopter
