Story

What is The Star Jump Challenge?

An exercise challenge to do 25 star jumps per day for 25 days in a row between 1st October and 25th October. Your star jumps can be done at home, parks, school, work or the gym. There are 5 different levels of star jumps you can do from sitting stars to star bursts. Watch our video tutorial for star jumps by clicking here.

Why you should take part?

25 people every day in the UK have an amputation due to diabetes complications, which adds up to 9,360 amputees per year. However, these amputations are largely preventable through sustainable lifestyle changes. To help in our efforts to reverse the type 2 diabetes epidemic, Public Health Collaboration (Charity no. 1171887/SC052248) are seeking to initially raise at least £9,360. This will better equip us to improve our NHS delivered courses that help people aim for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes remission. It will also help us with our research study in collaboration with the University of Surrey.

How you can take part?

Whether you're doing the challenge as an individual or team, simply set up a JustGiving fundraiser page connected with our main campaign by clicking here. Then share that page with everyone you can by posting photos and videos on social media using #StarJump2024

Who are the Public Health Collaboration?

Public Health Collaboration (Charity no. 1171887) was founded in 2016 to help people prevent and improve chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes through sustainable lifestyle changes.

The reason we have mainly focused our efforts on type 2 diabetes is because of the horrendous impact it has on people's quality of life as well as the tremendous pressure it puts on our healthcare system. For instance, the 25 daily diabetic amputations costs £1.2 million, which is over £400 million per year. And that's just for amputations. In total, diabetes has an annual cost of £10.7 billion to the NHS.

However, not all is lost, because over the years, we have learnt a lot about creating the change we want to see. Most notably, we have developed a health coaching service called The Lifestyle Club (TLC), which helps people living with type 2 diabetes aim for remission through healthier lifestyles. This improves quality of life, reduces the need for medication and prevents people from getting to the point of needing surgery. Available through select NHS GP practices across the country, TLC won the Silver Award for Primary Care Project of the Year at this year's HSJ Awards.

We have also developed a weekly online lifestyle support group that anyone can join for free. Many people have benefited from this approach, including the people in the video below:

With all of this in mind, we are a non-profit charity, and are only able to maintain our activities through kind and generous donations. If you would like to support our vision of a society where everyone enjoys good metabolic health then please either donate what you can to our main campaign or set up your own connected fundraiser page by clicking here.

Thank you and we hope that you join The Star Jump Challenge!
