Story
Sporting Minds UK, came into being on 26th November 2019. The then 19 year old Callum Lea, through personal experience in his own cricket career, knew there was a gap in specialist mental health support for young representative sportspeople. We have already helped 180 young athletes directly, through our fully funded support service with BUPA, and 1000's more indirectly through our awareness raising work.
Our goal is to raise £10,000 between now and the end of December. With this, we will:
1) Fund one to one mental health support for a further 100 young sportspeople who really need it
and
2) Continue to raise general awareness of how mental health is just as important as physical health for young athletes, particularly in this time of Covid-19.
Since launching our charity, we've received some incredibly positive feedback from the young sportspeople we've already helped:
I really appreciate the support Sporting Minds UK provided and i'm grateful for how quickly it came through. It was really reassuring in a difficult time to know there is support out there. Admittedly it did take me a little while to be brave enough to make the initial call, but once I'd done that, the support available on the phone and online has been great, very helpful and much appreciated. So what can you do? The DONATE link is at the top of our campaign page or alternatively if you would like to raise funds, you can set up your own event page that links directly to our campaign.
If enough people support this project, we will be able to offer specialist mental health one to one support for a further 100 young people, to help get them back on track in their chosen sport. It also has the potential to make a huge positive difference to the rest of their lives (and even to save some lives), while providing UK sport with a talent pool of amazing young athletes, across all sports.
