Story
After being diagnosed with a Brain Tumor at 17 months old Lewis Hine lead a life of Hospital visits and isolation in his bedroom. A further diagnosis of drug resistant epilepsy and hydrocephalus lead to 13 brain surgeries as well as others.
In 2014 Lewis Hine started a small project with the help of O2 Go think Big called Friend FInder. It was for young people who like him were left isolated and alone by their illness or disability. Friend Finders grew bigger and bigger as more people heard about it.
In 2016 Lewis made a shirt 90 second video about living with a life limiting illness and his project Friend Finder. Within 3 days over 32 million people had watched the video with more than 50,000 emails from young people all around the world saying they too felt isolated and alone from their illness or disability.
Lewis suddenly realised that the problem was far bigger than just him and his local community so he changed Friend Finder into a registered charity called A WORLD WITH FRIENDS.
Over the years Lewis held events both online and person to connect young people so they could have one of the most importants things that we all need in life.... A FRIEND.
The night of Lewis's school prom he was in Great Ormond street having treatment. After watching everyone on social media he decided to through a prom better than any other prom the A world with friends prom. It would be for young people just like him who were to unwell or their needs could not be met to attend their school prom.
Young people start to look forward to their prom night from a young age so its devestating when you cant go because you are fighting cancer or your seizures are too bad. At the AWWF prom everyone has to bring a parent/carer/teacher to keep them safe and so we are all the same. There is a room full of wheelchairs, feeding tubes and oxygen tanks but there is no disability or difference only complete inclusion smiles, laughter and fun.
Lewis and the AWWF youth committee have now held 7 proms and the young people attending have said that it was the best night of their lives. Parents saying that they cannot remember the last time they saw their child smile and dance like they did at prom.
The cost of putting on a prom has risen dramatically since covid. Vendors who previously donated their time can no longer afford to do so and Venues, hotel, travel have all put their prices up and up!
Lewis and the AWWF youth committee are determined to still put on the pros but we need your help.
Every donation you give goes a massive way to help young people who lives are normally filled with challenges and discomfort the chance to relax and have the night of their life... Their prom night!!!
