Story
OXSRAD is a life-enhancing health, fitness, and recreation centre in Marston, Oxford. For many, it’s a sanctuary—a thriving, supportive community where people of all abilities come together. It’s the only facility of its kind in Oxfordshire (and beyond), offering an accessible gym with adapted equipment, inclusive classes, neurological specialists, a sensory room, and a range of groups tailored to unique needs.
In 2023-2024, we supported 242 individuals with limiting disabilities or illnesses, including 116 young people under 25 years old.
For many, OXSRAD is their only opportunity to stay active and connect with others:
“Without OXSRAD, I couldn’t move my legs."
The challenges we address are profound. In England, 1 in 5 people live with a limiting disability or illness, and disabled individuals are almost twice as likely to be physically inactive (43%). This inactivity doesn’t just impact physical health—it affects confidence, mental health, and overall quality of life.
At OXSRAD, we are closing these gaps:
92% of members surveyed say OXSRAD has improved their physical wellbeing, 82% feel more confident and 82% agreed OXSRAD increased their sense of belonging.
For some, the focus is on physical progress. For others, it’s the welcoming, judgment-free environment that makes all the difference:
I don’t feel intimidated or judged like in other gyms.”
It’s a truly welcoming place. It’s helped me feel that a disability isn’t something to be ashamed of.”
What makes OXSRAD truly unique is its inclusive community. We’re not just a space for disabled individuals—we’re a space where everyone belongs. Teenagers exercise alongside 80-year-olds. Able-bodied and disabled members integrate here, breaking down barriers that too often separate people in society.
OXSRAD opens your eyes to disability. It’s a huge inspiration to be around.”
The inclusive community is the best bit. Gyms can be intimidating, especially for women, but OXSRAD is so different.”
On December 7th, we’re coming together to cycle 1,000 miles as a community—a symbolic challenge that reflects the uphill battle we face. The demand for OXSRAD’s services is growing rapidly, but public funding for disability-friendly services is shrinking.
To keep our doors open and services running, we must raise £3,500 every month (on top of our centre revenue).
Without your support, we cannot continue to provide the vital, life-changing services that so many rely on.
We could tell you all the reasons why OXSRAD matters, but our users say it best:
“I feel a lot more confident, positive, and happy about myself. I’ve been able to be more productive and find fulfillment through OXSRAD.”
Every donation helps us continue transforming lives and fostering a community where everyone belongs. As we move into winter, please help us secure OXSRAD’s future and remain a beacon of inclusion and support.
