Story
St Peter's - more cricket, for more people, more often.
We need your support to turn our aging clubhouse into a year-round fully accessible venue for the cricket club and wider community. We have planning permission and are embarking on our biggest challenge - to raise the money to make our dream a reality!
Read all about us and how you can help!
St Peter's Cricket Club was founded in 1883 and is the oldest surviving cricket club in the city of Brighton and Hove. The club has played at the historic Preston Park Velodrome since 1889, one of the finest urban sporting locations in Sussex that comprises two cricket squares, recently developed practice nets and the cricket clubhouse. It is the oldest velodrome in the UK having been opened in 1877. The arena has also been used for athletics meetings, including an England versus France international on 25 July 1925.
We have a growing community of 450 players of all levels of skill and interest. We run 6 mens teams in the Sussex County League, a Sunday side, Girls & Womens teams and Colts teams covering all ages from under 9 to under 16. We are proud to say that we have had some great successes on the pitch. However, cricket at St Peter's is much more than this. Our club values everyone who makes a contribution. We have made great strides to become ever more inclusive and it is the taking part that matters to us most. We want to go further though, particularly by continuing to build our Girls and Womens section.
OUR PROJECT
We are fundraising to rebuild our antiquated clubhouse so that we can create a purpose-built facility for our thriving club, and as a hub for the whole local community.
Our clubhouse is used widely by other groups during the summer, regularly by cycle clubs and for cycling events as well as for activity such as Pilates. During the COVID pandemic it was the base for the local foodbank. However, the existing building is over 130 years old and is no longer fit for purpose. It is simply too small to accommodate an extensive and growing membership and is not accessible to people with disabilities. It is underused outside the cricket season and can be mistaken for an empty and obsolescent building.
We received planning consent in October 2021 and the whole club is now embarking on the challenge of raising the funds to build it. Ultimately we to need to raise in the region of £750,000 to fully fund the project. We have a target of £30,000 to help fund phase one (development) before embarking on a wider fundraising appeal. We would very much appreciate your help to achieve our goal and help launch this essential redevelopment project. There are a number of ways you can help.
