Story
No one should face hunger at Christmas or wonder where their next meal is coming from. 2020 has been a hard year for many, exposing the true number of people in our community who live on insecure, low income and rely on foodbank support to keep themselves and their families fed.
Between April 2019 and March 2020, the Southwark Foodbank supported 6,565 people in Southwark. From April - September 2020, the Southwark Foodbank supported 11,064 people, nearly double the number in half the time! We moved to delivering food parcels and adapted our services quickly to meet growing need.
Every year, we run a Christmas programme, supporting families in the borough. This year, we continue that support and are preparing to support more people over the school holiday period, especially as more and more families rely on free school meals for their children.
This has been an incredible year. Incredible in how much more need we've seen, how much change and uncertainty has dramatically affected vulnerable people in our local community but also how much communities have come together in support of one another. We may have said it before, but we'll say it again, we are entirely blown away by the incredible support we have seen from all areas in our community this year and could not have helped as many people as we have without you!
Here are some ideas to make fundraising for the foodbank an activity you can get others involved in and make this December a fun and social time of the year!
