Story

About the Technology Transforms Lives Programme

The high youth unemployment rate South Africa has left many of young people trapped in a cycle of poverty and a poverty mindset, unable to comprehend their potential and contribution to society.

To help reduce youth unemployment in South Africa and to break this cycle of poverty, Belron, in partnership with Afrika Tikkun, created the Technology Transforms Lives ICT and Mentorship programme in 2021. The aim of TTL is to help young people achieve Internationally recognised ICT certifications and equip them with the skills and knowledge to become empowered and economically independent through securing a job or by starting their own businesses.

The training and mentorship have made me more passionate and made me want to further my skills as the ICT sector is always growing and changing. It has given a fire in me to become more proactive in learning and researching.

Technology Transforms Lives Mentorship Programme

TTL mentorship is a collaborative effort between Belron employees (globally) and candidates from Afrika Tikkun, which connects Belron employees with the candidates in a mentor / mentee capacity while they complete their qualifications.

In 2021, Belron staff began mentoring 20 students on a 1-2-1 basis. In 2022, the format changed to 16 mentors mentoring 60 students on a 2:6 ratio. In 2023, the programme increased to 120 young people and 28 mentors and in 2024, the same format continues, and the programme has been extended to include a separate mentoring programme for Afrika Tikkun employees.

TTL Impact

- 85% of mentees have gone on to find meaningful employment or start their own businesses.

- 100% of the 85% of candidates are economically empowered and have ICT qualifications

- As of this March 2023, over 200 young people will have gone through the programme.

- The 50 Female Software developers who completed the Power BI (Microsoft PL-300) examination, did so with 100% pass rate at first attempt.

- A candidate from the same cohort achieved a remarkable 100% on the Java (1ZO-808) exam.

We are hopeful that this programme will open up new opportunities and pathways for us to achieve our goals and dreams. We are thankful to Afrika Tikkun Services and Belron for providing us with this life-changing opportunity and for believing in us.

About the Challenge

Last year, Snowflake and Belron International took on the Abergavenny 3 Peaks (37.91 km) in 11 hours and raised £5,614 for the TTL Programme. This year, we hope to exceed last year's challenge with South Downs!

The South Downs challenge is a walking challenge which will be divided into to two distances: 50km and 25km. Depending on the distance the participants registered for, the 50km distance will start in Lewes, with a halfway point at the Fire Beacon Car Park for the 25km participants to join, all finishing at Beachy Head. All funds raised will go towards Belron’s Technology Transforms Lives Programme!

Please join us and/or help us to raise funds to get more students through TTL and change the course of a young person’s life!

£95 per person for the 50km walk. £55 per person for the 25km walk (participants can choose to do either the first or second half)
