Project Rebound was founded in 1967 at San Francisco State to support formerly incarcerated students. In 2020, Cal Poly Humboldt established its own chapter, which now helps nearly 40 students achieve their academic goals. In Spring 2024, the university expanded its efforts by launching a Bachelor of Arts in Communication program at Pelican Bay State Prison, enrolling 26 students. Additionally, outreach efforts extend to Humboldt County Juvenile Hall youth, promoting education as a pathway to positive growth. These initiatives underscore the need for prison reform and demonstrate how investing in people leads to safer communities.
The impact of education is undeniable. Graduates of Project Rebound with bachelor’s degrees have less than a 1% chance of returning to prison. In contrast, individuals released from Pelican Bay without access to education face nearly a 60% likelihood of recidivism within three years. Meanwhile, the state of California spends approximately $132,000 per year to incarcerate just one person in a maximum-security prison.
To further raise awareness, donations will support the construction of a "solitary garden" on Cal Poly Humboldt’s main campus in Arcata. This 6-by-9-foot garden will serve as a striking visual representation of the dimensions of a solitary confinement cell. Accompanied by an informational display, it will highlight education's critical role in breaking incarceration cycles and empowering individuals to redefine their futures.
