Snow leopards (Panthera uncia) are extraordinary animals, known for their elegance, adaptability, and elusiveness. Their thick fur, agility, and high-altitude mastery allow them to thrive in extreme mountainous environments of Asia. As apex predators, snow leopards play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats, preserving biodiversity. They also have an important cultural and spiritual significance, symbolizing resilience and the bond between humans and nature.
But snow leopards and their homes are under threat!
Habitat loss, poaching, and dwindling prey populations, along with the potentially devastating impacts of climate change, mean that snow leopards are vulnerable in the wild.
Marwell Wildlife is working in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, and home to almost two million people. The city is set in the foothills of the Trans-lli Alatau mountains and has grown and encroached into snow leopard habitats. In fact, research shows that of the 160 snow leopards that live in Kazakhstan, 25 are living within 30km of the city and five are actually living in the city itself. Ensuring that snow leopards can continue to live peacefully in and around Almaty is critical. That is why we have been working with local communities to raise awareness, as well as developing transboundary conservation strategies to provide corridors for snow leopards to travel between protected areas and across borders.
By protecting snow leopards, we are supporting not only this species but the entire mountain ecosystems that they call home, safeguarding the habitat and biodiversity of these unique regions.
By making a donation to protect snow leopards, you will be helping ensure the survival of these iconic animals.
