Story
On Monday February 6th at 4.17am, a massive magnitude 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Southern Türkiye followed by subsequent 6.4 and 6.5 magnitude earthquakes.
These deadly quakes were also felt in Syria and Lebanon.
The current death toll in Turkey alone has risen to over 1700 with thousands of people injured. In Syria, the death toll is currently over 1000 people and the injuries have now also reached the thousands. Numbers are expected to rise drastically as rescue workers start to dig through the rubble of collapsed building.
Many buildings collapsed including residential buildings where many families were sleeping due to the early hours of the morning.
This is definitely one of the largest earthquakes experienced there for hundreds of years, Martin Mai, professor of geophysics at King Abdullah University told Al Jazeera. Large damage and local devastation has to be expected, he said.
