People with the genetic condition of albinism lack the protective skin pigment melanin which makes them highly vulnerable to skin cancer. Advantage Africa works with our partner the Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism (SNUPA) to prevent needless deaths from skin cancer by promoting sun avoidance and protection. However, we also come across many people with albinism with advanced skin cancer urgently requiring surgery to save their lives. There are currently seven such people who, without this treatment and care, face an uncertain future.
We can only help Bashir, Ali, Nuru, David, Tony, Diana and Charles with specific donations for their treatment. There's no free cancer care in Uganda but you can help them by donating on this page. What's more, a kind family have pledged to double your donation up to a total of £7,000 so it goes twice as far. We are updating the running total regularly as the matched funding comes in for the donations made so far.
Peter Ogik, Director of SNUPA says, 'Please give what you can to ensure these people with skin cancer receive the care and treatment they need. Thank you!'
