Story
Meet Jasiah (A message from his mom, Michele)...........
When I learned about the YMCA offering financial assistance to families, I was intrigued and hopeful. I started off with interest in help for the summer because Jasiah is diagnosed with Autism. I didn't want him to be placed in a room in front of a TV screen all summer. I was afraid it would hinder any progress that he had made during the school year. I had often heard of all the activities that the YMCA Summer Camp offered, yet I faced the obstacle of being unable to afford it. I took the chance and applied for the scholarship program.
Applying for the scholarship program and the YMCA Summer Camp was the best decision I could've ever made for Jasiah. The staff was so accommodating, caring and willing to learn. They opened their arms and hearts to Jasiah. I began to see a new child within weeks of the summer camp. He learned to pray, he learned to make crafts, he made friends, and he even got to go on field trips to places that he would not have been able to otherwise.
If it had not been for the Coach a Child Scholarship Program, Jasiah would not have been able to have such a great summer experience. Seeing the excitement in him arriving at summer camp and the difference in him socially, made me want him to continue to be in that environment. He is also a part of the after-care program and we both love it. Ive never felt so secure with an after-care program before. I am thankful for the scholarship program ,and I dont know what I would do without it. Michelle Burr
