The Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School Music Department seeks support through its "Friends of Music" initiative to sustain and grow its musical offerings. Donations will fund staffing, equipment, and performances for students.
Our music department is an intrinsic part of the life and culture of our school and an area which we are both renowned for and very proud of. We know that for many students joining us in Year 7 and 12 the music department plays a significant role in this decision – understandably when you see what we offer. The quality, breadth and opportunities available are remarkable; to exemplify we currently have over 250 students attending at least one of our 30+ super-curricular ensembles on a weekly basis.
To sustain this level of additional opportunity, alongside the delivery of a curriculum of KS3, GCSE and two different music A Levels, requires a considerable resource, both in terms of people, equipment and time. Up until now we have managed to build provision through our school budget and from the money we bring in from concerts. This is no longer covering the costs of what we offer. Increasingly we have needed to hire bigger venues to meet the size of our groups (such as the recent concert at the Colyer Fergusson and the upcoming show at the Malthouse theatre). As an example of the cost of running these events, the moving of equipment and instruments alone will cost us in the region of £2,500 this year. We are therefore exploring ways to increase funding to allow us to continue this musical offer while making sure there are no compulsory charges for students or any ticket price increases.
To allow us to continue to provide our outstanding musical offering, unrivaled in the area, we are creating a newly formed “Friends of Simon Langton Girls' Grammar School Music Department” and asking for the community of family, alumni and local businesses to consider contributing to help sustain and grow the department further and the opportunities it offers.
As a contributing Friend, your generosity would play a vital role in the department's success. Your Friendship will fund important initiatives such as providing staffing capacity to continue the first class tuition in the many ensembles on offer, acquiring new sheet music, instruments and equipment for the choirs, bands and orchestras, supporting productions, and allowing students to continue to perform in prestigious venues beyond the school site.

Your contribution (the equivalent of £15 per half term or around £2 per academic week) at this level helps sustain the department's day-to-day operations. You will receive our newsletter to stay informed about the department's latest achievements, upcoming events, and exciting opportunities for engagement.
At this level, your contribution will help with running one of our smaller ensembles for a term. As a valued Patron level friend your name or business will be listed in all concert programmes (at your discretion) for the year along with the benefits listed at the Friend level.
Your contribution at this level will allow us to continue to improve our instrumental and equipment stock for all current and future students to access. As a valued Supporter level friend, your name or business will be added to our permanent “Supporters of Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School Music Department” wall plaque, housed in the music department building. You will be able to take advantage of two complimentary concert tickets, on request, to any of our performances and will also receive the newsletter and name recognition in all concert programmes for the year.
As a valued Gold Supporter level friend, your donation will be linked directly with the sponsorship and running of one of our most active ensembles for the year. For example, our 50-piece orchestra, senior choir, musical production or senior chamber choir. Your name or business (at your discretion) can appear on all correspondence involving the ensemble and will include recognition as sponsors in all programmes. Your name or business will also be added to the permanent “Supporters of Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School Music Department” plaque, along with all the other supporter benefits stated above.
You are of course also welcome to donate anonymously.
All funds raised will only be used in relation to music and music events, with a breakdown of how this revenue has been spent available each year. If you own, work in or know of any local businesses that may be interested in partnering, please do let us know or pass on this information.
