Story
Our collegiate brothers need our support now more than ever. A September 2020 survey of college students from Active Minds indicated that 75% of respondents reported their mental health as worsened since the beginning of the pandemic.
Additional statistics from the Human Power Project are also alarming:
25% of college students experience a mental health disorder each year.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death on college campuses.
42% of people with a substance use disorder have a co-occurring mental health disorder.
76% of college students report feeling overwhelmed.
80-90% of people with depression who seek help see improvement in their symptoms.
Sigma Nu's Day of Giving will raise gifts to fund mental health programs and resources provided for collegiate and alumni brothers.
There is a widespread stereotype that men don't have a wide array of emotions or express them in a genuine fashion. But men do have the natural array of human emotions (think of how we react to the "big game"). The challenge is that men often don't feel comfortable expressing certain emotions.
There's a big difference between men not having emotions and men not feeling comfortable expressing emotions. Most men don't have a problem talking about their physical health: we discuss how we're working out, what we're eating, and what we're doing to get stronger. It's time to do the same with our mental health.
Sigma Nu Fraternity has partnered with the Human Power Project to offer the Behind Happy Faces Collegiate Member Program to help brothers learn the basics, develop skills, and start these necessary conversations.
The program includes five (5) 15 to 25-minute lessons, with four (4) optional add-on lessons to help brothers understand mental health, learn coping skills, and how to talk to a brother who may be experiencing a mental health challenge. Lessons include facilitator notes, brief videos, and accompanying PowerPoint presentations.
Brother Ryan Meeks (Alabama) had a positive experience with the program.
It brought us together as a chapter to let anyone know that if they are having problems, mental health or other situations, to not be afraid to ask for help and seek out solutions."
That's just one of the many ways our Fraternity is working every day to foster and grow positive mental health in our brotherhood, but these efforts require support to continue and expand them.
Over 90% of the Fraternity's programs are funded directly through dues and fees paid by collegiate chapters and brothers. If we're going to help shape and mold the young men of today to be the ethical leaders of tomorrow, we need your support.
Invest today in our collegiate brothers by supporting the Day of Giving for the benefit of Sigma Nu's mental health programs and resources.
