Story
This challenge will see a group of incredible individuals trek approximately 200 miles across Lake Baikal in Siberia.
At 5,387 feet (1,642 meters) deep and with a surface area of 12,248 square miles (31,722 square kilometres) it is the deepest lake in the world and the seventh largest by surface area. The lake is so large and so deep that it is estimated to hold 20% of the worlds unfrozen fresh water. At an estimated 25 million years old, Lake Baikal is also considered to be the oldest existing lake in the world.
This unique environment provides its own set of challenges, from blizzards, broken ice, snowstorms, and even legends of the lake being haunted. Temperatures on the lake during winter when it is frozen can reach a chilling -21C. To say this provides a unique environment to walk over is putting it mildly.
We are all taking on this challenge to support Ronald McDonald House Charities to keep families close when their child is seriously ill in hospital. Having a child in hospital is a frightening time for families. You never think it will happen to you. Your nearest specialist hospital may be hours away. Where will you sleep? Get food to eat?
Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provide free 'home away from home' accommodation at one of their 12 Houses across the UK. On average families travel 99 miles to receive the best possible care for their child. Their Houses are moments away from specialist paediatric hospitals, enabling families to be by their childs bedside in a matter of moments. Their support is invaluable to families at a critical and worrying time in their lives. When a child is sick, a parent or carer's priority is to be by their side and they are there to support families and to reduce their emotional and financial strain.
