Story
Young asylum seekers have already overcome insurmountable challenges to find sanctuary in the UK, and they face further obstacles that prevent them from continuing to rebuild their lives once they are here.
Just like many young people in Britain, young asylum seekers, may also want to go to university to pursue a brighter future. However, while their cases are pending during the long immigration process, these ambitious young people are unable to access the student finance loans and bursaries available to their peers. Without this financial support, going to university is not an attainable goal.
As a University of Sanctuary, Sheffield Hallam University offers three Sanctuary Scholarships per academic year to support talented students who have sought asylum in the UK. The Sanctuary Scholarships recognise the determination, aspirations and resilience of asylum-seeking students and their academic abilities and potential to succeed. Consisting of a full tuition fee waiver, an annual maintenance grant, and a bespoke package of tailored support, the scholarships has instilled hope and provided these students seeking sanctuary in the UK the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and shape their future.
This year, staff, students and alumni are fundraising in support of Sanctuary Scholarships. By donating or fundraising for this worthwhile cause, you will be removing the barriers faced by these students so they have a real opportunity to transform their lives through education.
