Story

St John's church has one of the largest churchyards in the area and when the land was consecrated in the 1800s it was probably already an established hay meadow. In the 1990s local naturalists drew up a management regime to allow wildlife and particularly wildflowers to flourish.

The churchyard is recognised as a County Wildlife site managed for biodiversity and bereavement care.

It is a conservation area that has received awards for its contribution to promoting bio-diversity and is used by naturalists, dog walkers and the local community.

The long grass close to some of the graves is part of a plan to re-naturalise following a traditional hay meadow method by cutting in April, letting it grow, flower, and set seed and then cut for hay in July.

With a spectacular array of wildflowers in May & June it becomes home to butterflies, bees and burnet moths.

In Spring, the summer meadow is a mass of wild daffodils, bluebells, violets and wood anenomes.

But all of this comes at a significant cost, and we need help financially to be able to maintain these beautiful surroundings to our church. We would really appreciate your support of our work to maintain the churchyard and please do come and visit us to see the fruits of our labours and the benefits of your donations.
