Story
We are unique in our approach as we partner rescue dogs (who have often had very tough lives) with the veterans who train them (under supervision) over a nine-month period. We do this through an incredible network of volunteers (there's 20 of us) who give up Wednesdays and Saturdays to work with our professional trainers.
It's wonderful ....we rescue dogs and veterans - then train them to be partners !
Working positively with dogs has a profound effect on veterans wellbeing, all of whom have PTSD as a result of their line of duty. Many of these veterans have already tried every type of counselling and therapy available. But, they often find that working with a dog is the most effective way to help them through their trauma.
Kerry & Bert (her assistance spaniel) have a chat with us in the video . A year ago, she was in a desperate state, trying to find help with her PTSD.
"Thank goodness I found Service Dogs UK who understood everything I was going through."
"I thought, what on earth can a dog to alleviate this awful feeling? Little did I know the huge impact it has and how Bert and the programme have changed everything for me and my family. Bert came home in August but it feels like he's been here far longer. Love this boy so very much! Very emotional to realise how far Ive come in a year!"
We want to help as many veterans as possible, who, as a result of their Service jobs, are suffering from PTSD. The funding is vital for us because training an Assistance Dog takes nine months during which we supply all the food, insurance, toys, training equipment and vets bills.
Thank you :-)
