Story

Update

We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of the hundreds of people who have supported our Seal Appeal since its launch. Your kind donations have already raised more than £23,000 which will support us for a month in helping our dedicated Sanctuary team continue to look after our amazing resident animals during this difficult and uncertain time. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude goes out to all of you for your donations and wonderful messages of support for our charity! We are now entering our second month without our guests, and we need your support more than ever. Sending our very best wishes to all of you, and hoping that you are keeping safe and well! Thank you once again, from all of the SEA LIFE TRUST Cornish Seal Sanctuary team and our animals.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary has been an animal rescue facility for more than 60 years, and in that time the Sanctuary has never had to close our doors for such a long period of time. At this extremely challenging and difficult time for everyone, we are increasingly fearful over how we will be able to continue to care for our animals, especially with the necessary extension of the Coronavirus related lockdown in the UK.

As well as our vital work rescuing vulnerable seal pups in need of help and rehabilitating them so that they can return home to the wild, the Sanctuary provides a permanent home to a variety of marine mammals, each with their own individual care and medical needs.

It costs our charity £23,000 a month for our dedicated animal care team to feed, provide daily care, vital medicines and equipment to the Sanctuary's residents. We are now entering our second month without guests, and need your support more than ever.

As the only seal sanctuary in Cornwall, we have been an advocate for protecting marine mammals and our oceans, with our seals as ambassadors for this important educational message. Each year our Sanctuary usually welcomes more than 100,000 visitors through our doors. But with the Sanctuary being closed at this time, the loss of this essential income is proving detrimental to our charity.

We fully respect and are adhering in every way possible to the government guidelines, and we wish everyone well during these very tough times. Our animal care team are working incredibly hard looking after the animals, and the few staff we have left are trying to save every single penny to ensure that we can get by each day. It has been a really tough month for us, and with the necessary extension to the lockdown, our concerns for the Sanctuary and the costs to look after the animals are extremely worrying" Jana Sirova, Cornish Seal Sanctuary General Manager

In these difficult and uncertain times, we need to raise £46,000 which would help to cover 2 months worth of food, daily care, essential medicines and equipment for our resident animals. This would be an enormous help to the Sanctuary to continue looking after the animals in our care, especially with the majority of our animals requiring expensive daily medication.

A donation of any size would go such a long way, and help to protect the animals at our Sanctuary that has been a huge part of Cornwall's heritage and an important animal rescue facility for over 60 years.

Thank you so much for your kind support.
