Trans Rights Are Under Threat
Trans equality in Scotland needs your help.
As trans women, trans men and non-binary people's existence becomes more visible, we are finding our basic rights in society under increasing attack.
What started a few years ago in the USA with campaigns against trans people using public toilets and against LGBT kids being accepted at school has recently crossed the Atlantic to the UK. Opponents of trans equality have been emboldened by Trump's ban of trans people in the military, introduction of rules that force trans people to be treated as their birth sex, and proposals to allow doctors to refuse healthcare to LGBT people. Parts of the UK media are spreading misinformation and fuelling a backlash against trans equality and inclusion.
Opponents of trans rights aren't just trying to block improvement of the Gender Recognition Act. Some of them want to roll back decades to when we had no rights to be ourselves and live in freedom and safety. Some anti-trans equality activists in the UK have openly said that the Gender Recognition Act should be repealed, all trans women banned from women's services, and trans people's access to healthcare reduced.
LGBT people and our allies need to stand up together to resist these attempts to roll back our hard-won existing rights.
Some opponents of trans equality are well connected and their voices are regularly amplified in the media. We should be clear: just like in the US, attacks on trans rights pave the way for broader attacks on all LGBT rights.
Scottish Trans Alliance has worked intensively for trans equality in Scotland for the past decade. All our campaigning is funded from people's donations. We cannot fight back against the current attacks on trans rights without the resources for a positive and high-profile campaign to counter all of the negative messages. We urgently need your help to stand up positively against the current backlash!
Your donation will help us to urgently step up our campaigning, allowing us to hold more events, develop more resources and create increased visibility around our campaign in the Parliament and around Scotland. It is vital that all LGBT rights are protected. Please support our campaign.
