Story
Meet Becca, she volunteers on our Good Neighbour Scheme, we asked her a few questions about volunteering for SCCCC.
What made you volunteer? I attended an awards dinner where Mark (Chief Executive of SCCCC) spoke and I immediately wanted to find out more about the charity. Mark had me in tears when highlighting the number of isolated older people living in our community. The statistic is horrifying! I couldnt wait to get signed up as a volunteer and start visiting an older person.
How many people have you supported? I provided telephone support during the pandemic to a number of older people but Irene is the amazing lady that I visit regularly. I have been visiting Irene for a couple of years now and we have developed a really strong bond I love my visits with her. We talk about all sorts, we laugh lots, we put the world to rights and I have learnt so much about the history of Sheffield, especially during the war. Irene is such a wonderful person and I only hope I brighten her day as much as she brightens mine.
Would you recommend volunteering with SCCCC? No question 100%. We all live busy lives but I think its so important to take time out for somebody else. Who doesnt have time to sit down and talk to somebody for an hour? I run my own business and time can be tight but dedicating an hour or two to somebody else not only supports the older person you are visiting (which is the main thing) but can be hugely personally rewarding.
