Story
Since 2021, we have been planning the refurbishment and redecoration of the Saxon tower. The last major work was completed in the 1980s and the tower is no longer in the same pristine condition as the rest of the church. As more than 10,000 people climb the tower each year, its appearance should highlight its history and architectural significance as well as reflect the church’s custodianship of this important structure.
The Tower Project will:
- Repair the tower roof, to make it water tight, and any damage to the timber beams
- Fit new windows to improve the natural light and views of the tower’s architectural features and the city
- Refurbish the existing staircase and limewash the walls
- Redesign the Treasury and the display of church plate, documents and artefacts
- Improve the interpretation for visitors of the Saxon tower, north gate, Bocardo prison, and the church
A drawing of the proposed work can be found with the pictures of the tower.
Thank you for your contribution to the Tower Project.
