The war in Syria is in its 11th year. Over 6 million Syrians have fled their country. Almost 4 million Syrian refugees are now displaced in neighbouring Turkey. Cancer remains one of the main causes of death in Syria today and is a direct impact of the protracted war. (Biomedcentral.com, 2022). Sadly, Syrian children are not exempt and many are suffering various forms of cancer including leukemia. The human tragedy is that although many people may have fled the war, their problems are far from over. Suffering from cancer means their lives are still at huge risk.
As refugees, Syrian children and their families now find themselves living in makeshift tents on the border between Syria and Turkey. They do not have access to their basic needs of adequate shelter and food. Conditions are dire with no access to basic hygiene and medical treatment. As such, the chances of survival for young cancer patients are grim.
In response to this much needed cause, Deen Relief has launched its most recent campaign in Adana, Turkey:
Save Syrian Children with Cancer
Pictured below: Deen Relief founder, Shabek Ali, on his visit to Adana, Turkey, in April/Ramadan 2022. He is seen here with Taleb, a 7 year old Syrian boy who is suffering with leukemia.

Our aim is to provide homes to bring hope and promote healing for these vulnerable children and their parents. Till now, families have been living rough in camps within Turkey. Although the Turkish government provides free hospital treatment, many parents have been sleeping rough in hospital grounds simply to stay close by to their sick children in hospital. Clearly, this is not humane or acceptable.
Deen Relief's houses provide secure shelter, bedding and food for Syrian families whilst their children seek urgent hospital treatment in Adana. Desperate families can now be transferred directly to homes which are walking distance to the hospital. With these basic provisions met, a huge stress has been lifted from the minds of both parents and their child patients. We also endeavour to provide holistic care so that the children can enjoy a better quality of life in their recovery process.
This is just the beginning...
Deen Relief aims to provide many more homes in the future and help in the road to recovery for these innocent victims of war.
