Story
One street back from the main road passing through Pittenweem you will find the Scout Hall which not only houses the 12th Fife (East Neuk) Scout Group (including Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers) but also Guides and Brownies 1st Pittenweem Guides. It is also used by the community during the Arts Festival and for other events like the Burns Night, and can be hired out for childrens parties.
The building has a long history and was formerly a shambles (slaughter house), the South School in 1852 and a Picture House in 1920s. It has been used as a Scout Hall for many years. It is an interesting building and shows what looks like a lovely sandstone fleur de lys in art deco style, over the main entrance at the front of the hall. However, over the last year there have been signs of a structural fault around this entrance. After the cold winter, the cracks have become worse to a point where it has become dangerous and steel supports inside and outside the hall were fitted and the area was fenced off. A structural engineer has inspected the hall and recommended dismantling the front door area which includes the stone pediment. Unfortunately this area also supports the main steel beam that holds up the three roofs that make up our hall so it is a major job to support the roof whilst the works are carried out!
A preliminary report puts the costings of the works to be around £19000.00 plus vat , which is a massive blow on top of the fact that we have not been able to do any fundraising in the last year. This is also in addition to the ongoing care of the buildings and alterations to meet with current health and safety standards.
