Story
When it was announced that the Church building in Union Street was to be demolished there was a public outcry. "Why could it not be saved?", "It is part of the towns heritage and history." "Its shocking!"
Please don't let this happen to Northgate Church.
Northgate Church can be saved but only if the community comes together and makes the funds available for urgent repairs to be carried out
Any donations, large or small, will help us to preserve our iconic building for use by future generations.
In 1867 the foundation stone was laid for St George's Presbyterian Church.
It was this building which, in 1975, became The Northgate United Reformed Church, following the union of Congregational and Presbyterian Churches in 1972.
Northgate United Reformed Church is a Grade 2 listed building, constructed of locally quarried sandstone from nearby Houghton Bank. Of Gothic style, with a spire 36 metres tall. It has dominated the skyline of Northgate for over 150 years.
Please help to keep the spire in Northgate!
Internally the building has numerous open spaces on both its upper and lower levels. A virtual tour of the building is available at the bottom of this page.
Our aim for the future is to make the structure safe, and subsequently adapt these spaces to make them more suitable for use as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, meetings, club activities and for use by community support groups. In effect a hub for the community.
Northgate is changing. New housing developments are promised, which will surround our Church building. In addition the land bordering the nearby river Skerne will have new amenities and development. We will see existing structures replaced to create a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing approach to the centre of our wonderful town.
In 2025 the bicentenary celebrations of the birth of the railways will see many visitors from near and far come to Darlington.
Help us to preserve Northgate Church so that it can be part of this exciting future.
