Story

“Body & Soul helped me rebuild my life when I hit rock bottom... With their support, I have built a “life worth living”, I have goals and ambitions, and I have a hopeful outlook on life once more. Two years ago, I never thought I could recover to this point.... Describing [YANA] as specialised therapy is far too narrow, they have thought of everything someone recovering from crisis could need and incorporated it into the community.” - Esme, 27, 'You Are Not Alone' (YANA) graduate.

The UK is experiencing a youth suicide crisis:

- Circa 7% have attempted suicide by age of 17

- Mental health crises has reached record levels, 3x higher than in 2019

- Suicide rates among young people are the highest they have been for 30 years

Body & Soul is one answer to these issues. For 27 years, we have been transforming the life-threatening effects of trauma in multiple communities. Our multi-award-winning suicide prevention programme, You Are Not Alone (YANA), was the first UK charity to use group Dialectical Behavioural Therapy to support suicidal young people and has supported over 700 young people most at risk of suicide, almost all of whom have attempted at least once, most of them multiple times. However, in spite of their severe and complex needs, in this time none of the young people who have completed our programme have died by suicide, and 98% have never attempted suicide again.

The YANA programme represents a paradigm shift in suicide prevention. It is the only charity in the UK providing such a holistic combination of interventions, addressing anything that may impact our members' wellbeing all within one setting, alongside an intentional therapeutic community of peers.

Members go through an initial 6 months of intensive group DBT to stabilise their immediate risk of suicide, then enter the long-term transformational phase of the programme, where they receive non-time limited access to a range of activities such as 1:1 therapy, creative workshops, peer support and casework. Alongside this, Braver Together is our 12 online course designed to support partners, parents, siblings or chosen family of people on the YANA program, to increase their knowledge of symptoms and behaviours and help them understand how to supportive environment.

DBT is considered the gold standard therapy for suicide prevention, and this alongside whole family, non-time limited support means that YANA occupies a unique space in the suicide prevention landscape.

Your donation will help save and transform lives. For young people who have not been able to access the right support elsewhere, Body & Soul's award-winning method brings life where there is despair.

Thank you to our partners MediaTrust for making this campaign possible and bringing our vision for the short film to life.
