Story
Amazing marine animals are at the heart of everything we do, and nowhere more so than at our charity's marine animal sanctuaries, where we look after the rescued and resident animals in our care every day of the year.
Our Cornish Seal Sanctuary in the UK is dedicated to the rescue and care of sick and injured seal pups, providing a vital lifeline for these vulnerable young animals in need of help. These baby seals are sometimes only days old when they need rescuing because of illness or injuries caused by severe storms, harm from plastic pollution and litter, or being separated from their mum. At our specialist on-site Seal Hospital, our devoted team provides the expert care that the pups need every day so that, once they have regained full health, they can return home to the sea with a second chance. Luckily, most of the pups in our care make a full recovery but occasionally a seal's injuries mean that they simply couldnt survive in the wild. In this case, our Sanctuary is there to provide a long-term home and the best possible ongoing care for these incredible animals.
Our Beluga Whale Sanctuary is the first of its kind and provides a more natural home for previously captive beluga whales, like Little Grey and Little White, the Sanctuarys first residents. We are committed to showing that there can be a different future for beluga whales housed in unsuitable conditions and forced to perform for frivolous entertainment. In 2019, Little Grey and Little White made their ground-breaking 6,000 mile journey from an aquarium in China to their new home on Heimaey Island off the coast of Iceland. Here, they will be able to dive deep and explore the more natural environment of their sea-based Sanctuary, where they will continue to receive the care they need from our dedicated team. The Sanctuary also houses the island's Puffin Rescue Centre, where thousands of baby puffins - called pufflings - are checked over and treated for injuries every year.
We're striving to protect these amazing marine animals and birds, and make sure that they stay healthy and happy. But we can't do it alone. We rely heavily on revenue from people visiting our Sanctuaries to help look after the rescued and resident marine animals in our care. In these difficult and uncertain times, when visiting our Sanctuaries may not be possible, please consider making a donation to help support these beautiful animals which still need our ongoing care.
Thank you for your generosity.
