Sally Adams was a valued and loved member of the nursing administration team based at the university’s Falmer campus. She sadly died in 2017 and is much missed by her family, colleagues, and friends.
Due to Sally’s commitment to her role and to those nursing students she supported, Sally’s family have generously funded a scholarship to honour her memory.
“Sally loved her job at the University, especially interacting with and helping the students. She was passionate about enhancing the learning experience.
As a family we thought it was appropriate that the Scholarship should assist nursing students to have opportunities to understand patients and communities in settings outside of their clinical placements.
The “Sally Scholarship” has already helped a number of students undertake placements that they would not have been able to attend without the financial assistance of the Scholarship.
Sally would have loved the impact the Scholarship has made to these Nursing Students and how it allows them to experience aspects of nursing that they have a passionate interest in, contributing to their holistic development as healthcare practitioners.”
The scholarship enables selected student nurses to undertake a two- to four-week placement or voluntary learning experience, either in the UK or internationally. Successful applicants receive up to £500 which they can use to support them in enhancing and improving their learning and potential as a future professional nurse. Examples include funds to pay for accommodation and travel costs, or to fund care for children/dependents to allow them to undertake this experience.
Fiona Walker: Placement at Leeds Clinical Research Facility
Awarded the Sally Scholarship in 2023, Adult Nursing BSC (Hons) student Fiona Walker completed a four-week placement at Leeds Clinical Research Facility. She was able to put into practice her learning from the National Institute for Health Research’s module in Good Clinical Practice, understanding how patients are protected during clinical studies and how robust evidence informs new treatment protocols. Fiona shared “I’ve learned a huge amount about a specialism that I couldn’t have experienced locally and now have more confidence in the knowledge and skills that I’ve learned so far. I can’t wait to qualify and crack on with my future career – hopefully in research nursing!”.
Emily Cleaver: Placement in the Philippines
Similarly, nursing student Emily Cleaver completed a three-week placement in the Philippines, where she worked with the paediatric team at the government hospital, and then in the community health services and operating theatre for emergency surgeries with the Ati-ati tribe. Emily said, “I have never, and probably will never, have an experience remotely close to this again, I was completely thrown out of my comfort zone in the best possible way.” She added that “this whole experience has completely changed me as a person; it has shown me how strong people can be and how important certain attributes of nursing care are.”
Please help us continue to honour Sally’s legacy and create more learning opportunities for students like Fiona and Emily by supporting the Sally Adams Scholarship for nursing students.
