Story
It is true that above 95% of children in Nepal now have access to primary school, but what is not immediately apparent is that a huge majority of them are not learning effectively. At Tripurasundari and Paanchpokhari Rural Municipality, our survey showed that a disappointing 97% of students could not comprehend a sentence in English, and a similar percentage could not solve a simple division of two-digit numbers. To tackle this crisis, Mondo's partner in Nepal, HELP is implementing the Saathi Teachers Programme. Through this programme, young, enthusiastic and passionate graduates with a career plan in teaching and education are recruited and sent to classrooms for two years of teaching placement to teach English and Maths at the primary level in rural schools. A rigorous recruitment process followed by continuous support for our Saathi teachers and their respective schools, makes our Saathi teachers programme unique and a vital support for children. Currently, we have around 30 Saathi teachers and a support team working across 15 schools in three local municipalities, directly supporting over 2000 children daily.
HELP and Mondo Foundation plan to expand this programme and grow the number of Saathi teachers to support more children in Nepal, so, we are making an appeal to support this programme. The supporters can be individuals, schools or organisations directly contributing to specific Saathi teachers or partner schools.
