Story
Following the recent passing of former Leeds Rhinos player and MND Ambassador, Rob Burrow CBE, Leeds Rhinos Foundation has announced that they will donate all funds raised by our Run with the Rhinos team in this year’s Leeds 10K to the Rob Burrow MND Centre fund.
Rob inspired the entire country with his brave battle against Motor Neurone Disease (MND) since his diagnosis in December 2019. He passed away peacefully at Pinderfields Hospital near his home surrounded by his loving family.
Along with his friend and former teammate, Kevin Sinfield, Burrow has inspired nearly £20 million in fundraising across the UK and Ireland. This has included raising over £6 million to build the Rob Burrow Centre for MND in Leeds as a lasting legacy for those who follow him in their own personal battles with the disease.
To see the centre built was a wish for Rob and his family and this week the first part of the building work began on the site at Seacroft hospital. To support this vision, Leeds Rhinos Foundation have now pledged that the money raised from Run with the Rhinos will go to the Leeds Hospital Charity Appeal to continue Rob’s fight against MND.
Bob Bowman, CEO of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation added: “So typical of Rob’s bravery and positivity that he gave his backing, in his final days, to the ‘groundbreaking’ of the Rob Burrow MND centre at Seacroft Hospital which took place on Monday 3rd June.
“The Leeds Rhinos Foundation has been inspired, and has grown, through the connection with Rob and his family, we were so proud to be instrumental, along with other partners, to establish the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and I will never forget Rob taking part in the Leeds 10k along with Kevin in 2022.
“Rob’s passing occurred with only three weeks to go till the 2024 Leeds 10k where we will yet again have in excess of one hundred runners taking part, raising money for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation.
“We have decided that 100% of all monies raised will now be directed to the Leeds Hospitals Charity Rob Burrow MND centre appeal. There is still some way to go to ‘hit target’ and we hope this gesture assists. If there is any individual or business who would be interested in match funding what we raise, I would be delighted to hear from them."
