Story
My name is Samuel D’Autruche. When I became a Loma Linda University student, I had no idea of the health trials I would face or of the love and care that would surround me through that experience. Today, I am a stronger person physically, mentally and spiritually, and I'm ready to give back some of the love and support I received to other students.
Please continuing reading to learn more about my journey, my motivation, my plan and the way you can join the mission to champion healthcare heroes.
My Journey
Life has a way of teaching us the value of resilience and purpose. A few years ago, a life-threatening bout, similar to meningitis, rocked my world. Yet, it wasn't the ailment but the recovery that redefined me. I emerged not just stronger but with a profound understanding of the role community plays in our lives. Loma Linda University, an esteemed Adventist institution, upholds the motto “to make man whole.” Throughout my journey, I've experienced the truth of these words and their impact firsthand. The community, the support, and the values of Loma Linda University have played a pivotal role in my holistic healing and growth.
The Linda Williams Scholarship
I was deeply honored to receive the Linda Williams Scholarship; it recognizes excellence and demonstration of characteristics consistent with the mission and values of the School of Pharmacy. The scholarship also salutes extraordinary involvement in service and outreach and bears with it, an award of $5,000. While I am profoundly grateful for this recognition, I humbly submit that I may not fully deserve the commendations it bestows upon me. Yet, I know there are students out there who truly do. I am running for them. They are the real heroes, the ones who will shape our future and touch lives in ways we can't yet even imagine.
A radio ad resonates with me each time I hear it: “Loma Linda University... heroes made here.” I run, not just for personal accomplishment, but to champion these emerging heroes. Every stride in every race is driven not just by the temporary thrill of the finish line but by the enduring impact we can make together for the future heroes of Loma Linda University.
The words of 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 resonate with me: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” This isn't just about running. This is about the legacy we leave behind.
The Races
This year, I've committed to participating in multiple races:
• Riverside Mission Inn Run Half Marathon (10/22/23)
• San Bernardino Turkey Trot (11/23/23)
• 34th Annual Lopers Club Holiday Classic Half Marathon (12/03/23)
• Redlands Half Marathon (03/03/24)
• The LA Marathon (03/17/24)
Each race represents another opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the students of Loma Linda University.
