Story
On the 3rd October, our branch welcomed a trio of terriers - Thelma, Louise and Wilma. Unfortunately, these three young ladies had been abandoned. Members of the public found Thelma and Louise huddled together and the next day, Wilma was also found and taken to the vets. Though they were found in different areas, same village, it was clear that the dogs recognised each other and were possibly dumped together before Wilma wandered off.
Whilst all the dogs were in rough shape, entirely matted and nervous, it was obvious from the start that there was something seriously wrong with Thelma. She refused to use her back legs at all and was clearly in a lot of pain, she could only walk on her front two legs to avoid using her back, it was so sad to see 🥹
We rushed her to the vet, where x-rays were taken, and it was discovered that she had broken her pelvis in two places, the injury was so extensive that the bones were completely separated. She must have suffered tremendously and sadly we think she may have had the injury for quite a while for her to come up with a new way of trying to walk. Louise stayed right by her side the whole time, whilst Wilma watched on - they were all very brave.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, the vets noted that there was bruising on Thelma’s stomach which tied into her horrific injuries, they speculate that Thelma had been kicked. Obviously, we decided from seeing them that we needed to take them all into our branch care and get them healthy and happy again.
Of course, unfortunately we are limited on our resources. We don’t have an animal centre and being independently-run, we receive no government funding for all of our operations. We are extremely reliant on the kindness of the general public as our funds are raised by donations, the sales from our charity shops and our fundraising events.
If you can spare it, we would be extremely grateful to have some funds to put towards Thelma, Louise and Wilma’s medical expenses and boarding fees - as well as those of the other animals we currently have with us.
Thankfully we can now report that Thelma is on the mend, she has had her surgeries and she has exceeded all our expectations, we can't believe how quickly she’s adapted - a few days after surgery she was already trying to put weight on her back legs!
