September 2023 has been our busiest and most expensive month ever, following unprecedented demand We now face claims totalling more than £45,000 from September alone, for 21 dogs, some of whom have needed life-saving surgery and specialist treatment, including:
Eight-year-old German Shepherd Neeko – who served with Suffolk & Norfolk Police for seven years - needed major surgery to repair a damaged disc in his spine which left him unable to stand of walk, costing £9,500;
German Shepherd Bear also had herniated discs in his spine, requiring an operation costing £8,200. The 10-year-old – served with Sussex Police and still volunteers as a wellbeing dog for police staff – is now undergoing hydrotherapy and physiotherapy;
Eleven-year-old springer spaniel Zuma was a sniffer dog with Suffolk & Norfolk Police and had two bouts of illness over the summer with investigations eventually discovering a lodged grass seed which had caused infection. Treatment so far has cost £9,150;
Retired Ministry of Defence Police dog Max, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois from Cornwall, needed surgery after rupturing the cruciate ligament in his leg at a cost of £4,780;
Former Surrey Police dog, Fiji, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, required veterinary investigations and scans for suspected degenerative myelopathy, costing £3,150.
