Story
We aim to row the distance between the Dundee Sea Cadets and Menin Gate, Ypres, before The Last Post is played on Remembrance Sunday.
Ypres in Belgium was a key strategic position along the Western Front in WW1 and key battles took place in the area. Hundreds of thousands of men passed through Menin Gate and over the bridge to war; many of them to their deaths. The Menin Gate Memorial was unveiled in 24th July 1927 and the names of 54,000 men whose graves are not known are inscribed on the arches. These include casualties from Australia, Canada, South Africa and UK. Since the arch was unveiled in 1927 the Last Post is sounded every evening at 2000hrs by buglers from the Last Post Association. This takes place every day regardless of the weather and world events, to commemorate the loss of life in the two World Wars and conflicts since.
As a cadet unit, we play an active part in Remembrance commemorations each year. This year, as we continue to emerge from lockdown and the financial costs of that, we want to raise the profile of our unit and bring everyone together with one purpose ---- to Row for Remembrance.
