Story
Join us for a fun walk at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire on 14th May as we raise funds for the Rotary Impact, Walk For Water in Uganda Initiative. This casual networking event aims to raise £1,500 to pay for the installation of a water well at Magwa Primary School in the Jinja district of Uganda. The walk may be a few miles long (distance to be confirmed).
Magwa Primary School, situated in the heart of Jinja, currently has limited water facilities and inadequate sanitation. The installation of a water well at the school will provide safe drinking water for the students and staff, including water for cooking and food preparation. The well will also service the toilet facilities, which currently do not have running water. According to Water.org, 28 million Ugandans do not have access to improved sanitation facilities and millions lack access to safe water. Urban residents living in poverty pay up to 22% of their income to access water from vendors, reducing household income and hindering efforts to break the cycle of poverty. WaterAid reports that 44% of the population, or 20.2 million people, do not have clean water; 37 million people, or 8 in 10, do not have a decent toilet; and 2,696 children under 5 die each year from diarrhea due to dirty water and poor sanitation.
Rotarian Richard Narayan from the Rotary Club of Leicester Impact Group has visited the school and witnessed the dire sanitation conditions. The installation of a water well will not only improve sanitation and access to water at the school, but will also benefit the children and the local economy.
Even if you are unable to join us for the walk on 14th May, you can still make a difference by donating to our Walk For Water fund. Thank you for your support.
