Story

In the end, finding Roots has helped me find serenity and myself. And for that, I am forever grateful.” - TJ

At SIG Penrose Roots, we provide services to support individuals at their most vulnerable points, helping them reach their potential by making them feel valued and wanted, regardless of their past or current circumstances.

Since 2021, SIG Penrose Roots has:

• Helped over 2,000 people rebuild their lives

• Grown 600kg of produce yearly for local food banks

• Reduced social isolation for 100% of members

With your support, we can continue to be a lifeline for local people facing health inequities and mental ill-health.

For just:

• £5 a month, you can provide essential supplies for the Roots to Recovery Garden, allowing members to experience the therapeutic benefits of nature and get holistic support.

• £10 a month, you can fund group support sessions, giving Roots members a safe space to share their experiences and build strength.

• £25 a month, you can aid individualised support for members, providing crucial support to help Roots members navigate their recovery journey and build confidence for independent living.

Joe's Story

"Roots is a wonderful place, and I feel blessed to be able to come here. People don't judge, which I am grateful for." - Joe.

Joe struggled with mental health issues and substance use for years, often isolated at home. In 2016, he took a brave step and visited Roots.

Since joining Roots, Joe has:

• Not experienced a mental health relapse or used substances.

• Passed his driving test.

• Learned new skills like gardening and mental health first aid.

Now, Joe welcomes new members, knowing how challenging the first day can be.

Colin's Story

"I have enjoyed meeting people and being part of a community. I find I am finally living here." - Colin.

Colin, a long-time Luton resident, faced severe mental health challenges after retiring. He became suicidal and was hospitalised. Upon discharge, he felt isolated and struggled with family relationships.

In 2023, Colin discovered Roots and support and joy in gardening, community support, and nature walks.

The impact on Colin's life:

• Reduced social isolation.

• Improved mental health and wellbeing.

• Made friends for the first time in decades.

Inspired by his experience, Colin’s former employer donated to Roots, giving back to the service that supported him.

Holly's Story

"Roots is a really friendly, fun and welcoming place. It is somewhere to make friends and boost your confidence. I always leave feeling positive." - Holly.

Holly faced multiple mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. After numerous hospital stays, she struggled to find a supportive community.

Roots changed Holly's life:

• Secured permanent housing.

• Received free therapy sessions.

• Developed a crucial support system for managing her mental health.

Holly now lives a happy, healthy life with her new support network and home.
